First aid for a plumbing problem

Choose what’s happening. Here’s what to do while I’m on my way.

Water is leaking
  1. Turn off the main stopcock. In British homes, it is usually under the kitchen sink.
  2. Switch off the circuit for the room where water is leaking, especially if it is dripping into a light fitting.
  3. Photograph the damage for your insurer, then mop up what you can.

No heating or a cold radiator
  1. Check the boiler pressure. It should be between 1 and 2 bar.
  2. Try bleeding the cold radiator. Check the pressure again afterwards.
  3. If the boiler shows a fault code, write it down for me. It can save a second visit.

A blocked drain
  1. Do not pour chemicals down the drain. They corrode pipes and make cleaning harder.
  2. Try a plunger. Wire can puncture older pipes.
  3. Stop running water into other drains on the same stack.

An old boiler needs replacing
  1. Find the latest service record and the boiler’s year of manufacture.
  2. Photograph the boiler and its connections so I can see what is needed.

Do you really answer at night?

Yes, I take emergency calls at night too. If I’m free, I set off straight away. If I’m at another emergency, I’ll tell you and explain what to do while you wait.

Do you charge for travel?

The call-out costs the same across Manchester. Beyond 12 miles from the centre, I add 70p per mile and tell you the travel cost in advance.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes, my work is guaranteed for two years. Materials carry the manufacturer’s warranty. If the same problem returns within two years, I’ll come back free of charge.
